Guidelines for Special Issues
Cinema: Journal of Philosophy and the Moving Image (CJPMI) accepts proposals for Special Issues submitted by experts in a specific field, within CJPMI’s Aims and Scope. These experts will work as Guest Editors of the Journal. Special issues include a collection of articles and an Introduction/Editorial authored by the Guest Editors.
Proposals can be submitted at any time.
1. Initial proposals and agreement in principle
All proposals for Special Issues must receive an initial approval from the Managing Editors of CJPMI.
Proposals for Special Issues should be emailed to the Editors (cjpmi@fsch.unl.pt), and should include the following:
- Title for the Special Issue
- A brief CV of the proposed Guest Editors (usually no more than three)
- A draft of the Call for Papers
- An outline timetable
Special Issues from Conferences
CJPMI also accepts proposals for Special Issues that result from a selection of papers delivered in relevant conferences. In these cases, the organizing committee of the conference can propose a Special Issue by providing the details of the conference.
Proposals for Special Issues from Conferences should be emailed to the Editors (cjpmi@fsch.unl.pt), and should include the following:
- Title for the Special Issue
- A brief CV of the proposed Guest Editors (usually no more than three)
- Titles and draft abstracts of each of the proposed articles and any draft papers that are available
- Brief details of contributors
- An outline timetable
All proposals are subject to approval by the Managing Editors of CJPMI. The Managing Editors will consider whether the initial proposal is of interest to the Journal and the proposed Guest Editors will be informed whether or not they will be granted agreement in principle to proceed. The Managing Editors will then appoint one member of the Editorial Team of CJPMI (henceforth, CJPMI Editor) to assume responsibility for the sponsorship of that Special Issue, working as a Co-Editor of that volume.
2. The review process and editorial procedure
Special Issues follow the same procedures of the ordinary issues of CJPMI and are submitted to the same rules and procedures. Guest Editors must guarantee that the issue they are editing fully respects the CJPMI Ethics and peer-review procedures.
As submissions for the Special Issue arrive, the Guest Editors will be able to access these and assess whether each paper is within the scope of the Special Issue. The paper will then be either rejected or sent out for peer review. If a paper does not meet the criteria required for the Special Issue, Guest Editors may reject papers without them having been sent for external peer review. The CJPMI Editor is available to assist should there be any doubt about a course of action to take.
Once manuscripts are accepted, the double blind peer review of each paper is carried out in the normal manner. This procedure is of responsibility of the Guest Editors. The CJPMI Editor is, again, available to assist should there be any doubt about a course of action to take.
Once reviews are returned, the Guest Editor will need to take a provisional decision and this will be communicated to the CJPMI Editor for confirmation of decision. Should the CJPMI Editor disagree with the acceptance decision proposed, the Guest Editor may appeal at this point if wished, but final decision is the responsibility of the CJPMI Editor.
As articles start to be accepted, the Guest Editors will be prompted to start preparing an introductory article (which will be original and not previously published) to be submitted to the Editorial Team no later than 3 weeks before the release of the Special Issue. This Introduction should set the scene and provide the premise for the Special Issue referencing the articles included within.
It should be noted that during the review process, the CJPMI Editor can reject individual papers, or, in consultation with the Editorial Team, the Special Issue as a whole, if it does not meet quality standards. If fewer articles than anticipated are accepted, a part-Special Issue may be proposed by the CJPMI Editor, to be include as a dossier in another issue of the Journal.
The Managing Editors of CJPMI will reserve for itself the final decision on any disagreements that arise during the editorial process.
3. Guest Editors
Guest Editors are responsible for:
- writing and releasing the call for papers;
- receiving the manuscripts;
- managing the submission of papers;
- managing the reviewing process;
- requesting changes, and
- providing an acceptance/rejection decision to the authors
Guest Editors can review the submitted manuscripts, but in that case, they will ask for the help of, at least, one external reviewer
Guest Editors are not allowed to author papers in their own special issue.
Guest Editors can review papers of the special issue, but there must be also external reviewers for each submitted paper.
Guest Editors must write an Editorial that provides an overview of the Special Issue’s content.
4. Procedures
. Guest Editors propose a Special Issue of CJPMIThe Managing Editors of CJPMI analyze and approve/reject the proposal and designates one CJPMI Editor to join the Guest Editors
. The CJPMI Editor and the Guest Editors agree on the final dates and final timetable for the Special Issue
. The Guest Editors release a call for papers
. For conference special issues, there is no need to issue a call for papers.
. The Guest Editors receive all submissions to the Special Issue, screens them for approval, and forwards them to the Senior Editor of CJPMI.
. The Guest Editors and CJPMI Editor decide on acceptance or refusal of submitted papers. Papers can be either rejected or sent out for peer review
. Guest Editors manage the peer-review process and request changes to papers comparing the final papers with the initial ones, guaranteeing that all issues raised by reviewers have been answered
. Guest Editors and CJPMI Editor decide on acceptance for publication of reviewed manuscripts
. Guest Editors write and send to the Managing Editors of CJPMI the Introduction/ Editorial of the Special Issue for final approval
. Papers are paginated in the final issue
. Proofs are sent to the authors and Guest Editors for final corrections.
